Game of Thrones in Girona: the route
Game of Thrones filming locations in Girona (season 6): the cathedral as the Sept of Baelor, the old town as Braavos and the Arab Baths.
Game of Thrones turned Girona into one of the great backdrops of its sixth season, filmed in the city in 2015. The old town became Braavos and the cathedral stood in for King's Landing. This is the route to the real filming locations you can still walk through across the Barri Vell.
The cathedral as the Great Sept of Baelor
The Cathedral of Santa Maria, with its dramatic Baroque staircase of around 90 steps rising over Plaça de la Catedral, doubled as the exterior of the Great Sept of Baelor in King's Landing. This is where Margaery Tyrell's walk of atonement begins and where Jaime Lannister rides his horse up the steps to stop it. It's the most recognisable shot of the show in Girona.
The old town as Braavos
Girona's old quarter stood in for the Free City of Braavos. Along the Barri Vell streets we see a blind Arya Stark begging at the foot of the stairs behind the cathedral, and being chased by the Waif. Walking these medieval alleys means reliving those scenes almost shot for shot.
The Sant Domènec stairs and the oranges
The Pujada de Sant Domènec, a stepped street in the heart of the old town, is where Arya tumbles down and scatters baskets of oranges as she flees. Nearby, the blue door of the church of Sant Martí Sacosta and the Palau de Caramany complete the Braavos market setting.
The Arab Baths and El Call
The Banys Àrabs, a late 12th-century Romanesque building (1194), appear as the place where a wounded Arya hides from her pursuer. The chase also winds through the narrow streets of El Call, the Jewish quarter and one of the best-preserved in Europe.
The monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants
At the foot of the Barri Vell, the Romanesque monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants served as the Citadel in Oldtown, where Sam Tarly dreams of training as a maester. The nearby Pont de Sant Feliu, a 12th-century stone bridge, also appears in the series.
